Abstract:

Until recently, the Asiatic pitviper genus Tropidolaemus Wagler, 1830 comprised only two species, the rare T. huttoni (Smith, 1949) from India and T. wagleri (Boie, 1827) (for discussion about authorship and data of publication see Vogel et al. 2007), which is known to represent a polytypic complex of morphologically distinct species occurring in South Vietnam and from the Malaysian Peninsula through Sumatra, Borneo, the Philippines and on Sulawesi (Iskandar & Colijn 2001, Vogel 2006). In a first paper of a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the T. wagleri complex, Vogel et al. (2007) demonstrated that these widespread and medically important venomous snakes actually represent at least three different taxa (wagleri, subannulatus, and philippensis), of which T. wagleri sensu stricto is restricted to Southern Thailand, West Malaysia as well as Sumatra and some adjacent islands. Therein, the green form of Sulawesi pitviper population (in addition to those of Borneo, and most Philippine islands) was preliminary assigned to the taxon subannulatus Gray, 1842.

Abstract:

The small, unsigned panel The Lamentation of Christ in the Rijksmuseum’s collection is attributed to Colijn de Coter and dated around 1510-15. There is another, almost identical version in a private collection. Visual analysis and analytical techniques including UV fluorescence, infrared reflectography, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-radiography, dendrochronology and paint sample analysis, were used to examine and compare the materials and techniques in both paintings in order to investigate the relationship between the two. Because only a small oeuvre is attributed to De Coter and there has as yet been very little scientific analysis of his paintings, this comparative investigation provides more information about the artist’s workshop practices. This research has revealed that the materials and techniques used in the two versions differ hardly at all and, moreover, correspond to standard practice in early sixteenth-century painting in the Low Countries. The thicker outlines in the underdrawings in both cases indicate that the compositions were traced or copied from the same model. The underdrawings of the two Lamentations also correspond to those in other paintings attributed to the artist. This makes it likely that both versions came from De Coter’s workshop.

Abstract:

IntroductionSeveral risk factors make older adults more prone to psychosis. The persistent growth in the elderly population makes important the necessity of accurate diagnosis of psychosis, since this population has special features especially regarding to the pharmacotherapy and side effects.ObjectivesTo review the medical literature related to late-life psychosis.MethodsMedline search and ulterior review of the related literature.ResultsReinhard et al. [1] highlight the fact that up to 60% of patients with late onset psychosis have a secondary psychosis, including: metabolic (electrolite abnormalities, vitamines defficiency…); infections (meningitides, encephalitides…); neurological (dementia, epilepsy…); endocrine (hypoglycemia…); and intoxication. Colijn et al. [2] describe the epidemiological and clinical features of the following disorders: schizophrenia (0.3% lifetime prevalence > 65 years); delusional disorder (0.18% lifetime prevalence); psychotic depression (0.35% lifetime prevalence); schizoaffective disorder (0.32% lifetime prevalence); Alzheimer disease (41.1% prevalence of psychotic symptoms); Parkinson's disease (43% prevalence of psychotic symptoms); Parkinson's disease dementia (89% prevalence of visual hallucinations); Lewy body dementia (up to 78% prevalence of hallucinations) and vascular dementia (variable estimates of psychotic symptoms). Recommendations for treatment include risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, aripiprazole, clozapine, donepezil and rivastigmine.ConclusionsDifferential diagnosis is tremendously important in elderly people, as late-life psychosis can be a manifestation of organic disturbances. Mental disorders such as schizophrenia or psychotic depression may have different manifestations in comparison with early onset psychosis.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract:

ABSTRACTSome members of the familyEnterobacteriaceaeferment sugars via the mixed-acid fermentation pathway. This yields large amounts of acids, causing strong and sometimes even lethal acidification of the environment. Other family members employ the 2,3-butanediol fermentation pathway, which generates comparatively less acidic and more neutral end products, such as acetoin and 2,3-butanediol. In this work, we equippedEscherichia coliMG1655 with thebudABoperon, encoding the acetoin pathway, fromSerratia plymuthicaRVH1 and investigated how this affected the ability ofE. colito cope with acid stress during growth. Acetoin fermentation prevented lethal medium acidification byE. coliin lysogeny broth (LB) supplemented with glucose. It also supported growth and higher stationary-phase cell densities in acidified LB broth with glucose (pH 4.10 to 4.50) and in tomato juice (pH 4.40 to 5.00) and reduced the minimal pH at which growth could be initiated. On the other hand, the acetoin-producing strain was outcompeted by the nonproducer in a mixed-culture experiment at low pH, suggesting a fitness cost associated with acetoin production. Finally, we showed that acetoin production profoundly changes the appearance ofE. colion several diagnostic culture media. NaturalE. colistrains that have laterally acquiredbudABgenes may therefore have escaped detection thus far. This study demonstrates the potential importance of acetoin fermentation in the ecology ofE. coliin the food chain and contributes to a better understanding of the microbiological stability and safety of acidic foods.

Abstract:

ABSTRACTGrowth ofEscherichia colion glucose in batch culture is accompanied by the excretion of acetate, which is consumed by the cells when glucose is exhausted. This glucose-acetate transition is classically described as a diauxie (two successive growth stages). Here, we investigated the physiological and metabolic properties of cells after glucose exhaustion through the analysis of growth parameters and gene expression. We found thatE. colicells grown on glucose in batch culture produce acetate and consume it after glucose exhaustion but do not grow on acetate. Acetate is catabolized, but key anabolic genes—such as the genes encoding enzymes of the glyoxylate shunt—are not upregulated, hence preventing growth. Both the induction of the latter anabolic genes and growth were observed only after prolonged exposure to low concentrations of acetate and could be accelerated by high acetate concentrations. We postulate that such decoupling between acetate catabolism and acetate anabolism might be an advantage for the survival ofE. coliin the ever-changing environment of the intestine.IMPORTANCEThe glucose-acetate transition is a valuable experimental model for comprehensive investigations of metabolic adaptation and a current paradigm for developing modeling approaches in systems microbiology. Yet, the work reported in our paper demonstrates that the metabolic behavior ofEscherichia coliduring the glucose-acetate transition is much more complex than what has been reported so far. A decoupling between acetate catabolism and acetate anabolism was observed after glucose exhaustion, which has not been reported previously. This phenomenon could represent a strategy for optimal utilization of carbon resources during colonization and persistence ofE. coliin the gut and is also of significant interest for biotechnological applications.

Abstract:

Pulmonary arterial hypertension-congenital heart disease (PAH-CHD) is characterized by systemic to pulmonary arterial shunts and sensitively responds to volume overload and stretch of the vascular wall leading to pulmonary vascular remodeling. We hypothesized that the responses of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) to mechanical stress-associated volume overload may promote vascular remodeling in PAH-CHD. Here, we show that significantly increased collagen was in the PA adventitial layer by trichrome staining in PAH-CHD patients and an aortocaval fistula (ACF) rat model in which chronic vascular volume overload induced-PAH. We assessed the gene expression profiles of SMC markers, extracellular matrix, and collagen in isolated SMCs from pulmonary and thoracic vessels with cyclic stretch-triggered responses by real-time PCR analysis. The data corresponded to collagen deposition, which modulated pulmonary vascular remodeling in clinical and experimental PAH-ACF cases as well as in cyclic stretch-triggered SMCs in an in vitro model. We observe that collagen I A2 (COLIA2) is expressed in the control rat, but collagen I A1 (COLIA1) and Notchs remarkably increase in the lungs of ACF rats. Interestingly, closing the left-to-right shunt that leads to a reduced blood volume in the PA system of ACF rats (ACFRs) decreased the expression of COLIA1 and increased that of collagen I A2(COLIA2). This study contributes to the stretch-induced responses of SMCs and provides important future directions for therapies aimed at preventing abnormal matrix protein synthesis in volume overload-induced pulmonary hypertension (PH).

Abstract:

ABSTRACTEscherichia coliis the most commonly used indicator for fecal contamination in drinking water distribution systems (WDS). The assumption is thatE. colibacteria are of enteric origin and cannot persist for long outside their host and therefore act as indicators of recent contamination events. This study investigates the fate ofE. coliin drinking water, specifically addressing survival, biofilm formation under shear stress, and regrowth in a series of laboratory-controlled experiments. We show the extended persistence of threeE. colistrains (two enteric isolates and one soil isolate) in sterile and nonsterile drinking water microcosms at 8 and 17°C, withT90(time taken for a reduction in cell number of 1 log10unit) values ranging from 17.4 ± 1.8 to 149 ± 67.7 days, using standard plate counts and a series of (reverse transcription-)quantitative PCR [(RT-)Q-PCR] assays targeting 16S rRNA,tuf, uidA, androdAgenes and transcripts. Furthermore, each strain was capable of attaching to a surface and replicating to form biofilm in the presence of nutrients under a range of shear stress values (0.6, 2.0, and 4.4 dynes [dyn] cm−2; BioFlux system; Fluxion); however, cell numbers did not increase when drinking water flowed over the biofilm (P> 0.05 byttest). Finally,E. coliregrowth within drinking water microcosms containing polyethylene PE-100 pipe wall material was not observed in the biofilm or water phase using a combination of culturing and Q-PCR methods forE. coli. The results of this work highlight that whenE. colienters drinking water it has the potential to survive and attach to surfaces but that regrowth within drinking water or biofilm is unlikely.IMPORTANCEThe provision of clean, safe drinking water is fundamental to society. WDS deliver water to consumers via a vast network of pipes. E. coliis used as an indicator organism for recent contamination events based on the premise that it cannot survive for long outside its host. A key public health concern therefore arises around the fate ofE. colion entering a WDS; its survival, ability to form a biofilm, and potential for regrowth. In particular, ifE. colibacteria have the ability to incorporate and regrow within the pipe wall biofilm of a WDS, they could reinoculate the water at a later stage. This study sheds light on the fate of environmental and enteric strains ofE. coliin drinking water showing extended survival, the potential for biofilm formation under shear stress, and importantly, that regrowth in the presence of an indigenous microbial community is unlikely.

Abstract:

Abstract. Two species of the limnic ostracode genus Rosacythere Colin (Limnocytheridae, Timiriaseviinae) have been identified in the uppermost Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) of the southern part of the Paris Basin, France. This record is the earliest for this genus and for the ‘Kovalevskiella group’ of Colin & Danielopol (1978 Colin & Danielopol (1980). This study also confirms that most of the Timiriaseviinae morphological groups really started to diversify during the Middle Jurassic.

Abstract:

ABSTRACTHealthy carriage of CTX-M-type extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producingEscherichia coliwas examined by thrice collecting fecal samples from the same 199 healthy Vietnamese subjects every 6 months. Using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), identical PFGE patterns throughout the three samplings were not observed, although prevalence ofE. coliin the subjects was around 50% in the three samplings. Our results suggested a short carriage period of the CTX-M-type ESBL-producingE. coliin healthy Vietnamese subjects.

Abstract:

We present the first documented records of Deepwater Sculpin, Myoxocephalus thompsonii, from northern Alberta, and the second record for the province. Three specimens of Deepwater Sculpin were taken in gill nets set at 17 to 20 m depth in Colin Lake, Alberta, on 15 September 2001. Colin Lake, located in the Canadian Shield region of northeastern Alberta about 125 km northeast of Fort Chipewyan, drains into Lake Athabasca via the Colin River. The only other known Alberta population of Deepwater Sculpin inhabits Upper Waterton Lake in the southwestern corner of the province. This record is approximately 300 km SSE of the nearest verified record in the Northwest Territories and 400 km NW of the nearest verified record in Saskatchewan.

Abstract:

Abstract. In 1957, Grékoff described Metacypris pustulosa trom the Loia Formation originally assigned to the “Wealden” but subsequently dated of Albian age (Maheshwari et al. 1977) of Central Zaire. This species is characterized by its small size (about 0.6 mm long), the surface of the carapace covered by numerous small hemisphaerical pustulae and the presence of two two subvertical sulci. In the original description, Grékoff compared this species with Metacyrpis consobrina Jones, 1893 from the Bear River Formation also of Albian age of Wyoming (U.S.A.). Later, in 1961 and 1962, Pinto & Sanguinetti considered Metacypris pustulosa as a junior synonym of Metacypris consobrina . The type-material of Metacypris consobrina was restudied and illustrated by Colin & Danielopol (1981: Pl. 14, figs. 1–4). This species shows striking similarities with Metacypris pustulosa: small size, similar shape and same micro-pustulose ornamentation. It nevertheless differs from the African species by the presence of a single and weak subvertical sulcus. Recent examination of material from the Albian of Central Zaire (Colin, in press) allowed to clearly demonstrate the presence of the two sulci which were mentioned by Grékoff in the original diagnosis but are not visible on the illustrations. The general morphology, size, omamentation and the presence of the two sulci lead us to transfer this species to the genus Frambocythere Colin, 1980 (in Colin & Danielopol, 1980) and therefore to the “Kovalevskiella lineage” (Colin & Danielopol 1980). It is worth mentioning that in 1965, Danielopol already suggested affinities beteween these forms and the genus Kovalevskiella . . .
