The new pharmacy manager at the York Walgreens store won’t have to ask for directions when she travels around York. That’s because Allison (Riley) Donnelly is a York native and spent her entire life here before heading off to college.
Donnelly is the daughter of Tod and Lisa Riley of York and is the granddaughter of Diane Mierau of York and the late Randy Mierau.
After graduating from York High School in 2016, Donnelly headed off to the University of Nebraska — Kearney where she enrolled in the KHOP program. The Kearney Health Opportunities Program (KHOP) is a cooperative program between the University of Nebraska at Kearney and the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The purpose is to recruit high school students from rural Nebraska and prepare them to return and practice healthcare in rural Nebraska.
She graduated from UNK with an undergraduate degree in Health Sciences with a minor in Chemistry. Pharmacy school at UNMC in Omaha was next on the agenda. She graduated in May of this year from UNMC.

“We had three years of classes and the final year was spent in ten 4-week rotations,” said Donnelly. “Four of those had to be in rural areas and those four for me were in York, Kearney, Gretna and Grand Island. One of those rotations was a poison center rotation in which I got a behind-the-scenes look at the Henry Doorly Zoo and its assortment of venomous snakes. The rotation was also very eye-opening on all the things kids can get into.”
It was during her years at Kearney when she met her now husband Patrick. The couple was married three years ago today if you are reading this on Wednesday. They welcomed daughter Hazel about 1 ½ years ago.
It was also during the years at Kearney when she began her relationship with the Walgreens company. She worked part-time at the Kearney store when in college and also worked here at the York Walgreens during the summer months when she was back home.
“Retail pharmacy was not my first plan,” admitted Donnelly. “But the chance to move back to my hometown and see familiar faces and do what I love everyday has been great.”
“Walgreens has been supportive of everything,” said Donnelly. “From getting my license and recruiting me and supporting me while I passed my boards and law exam.”
“I’m very passionate about what I do,” she added. “At the end of the day, I’m able to help patients and deliver patient-centered care to our customers.”
She also added that Patrick, who works in the tech department at Cornerstone Bank, has been very supportive of her dreams. The couple has been busy getting their York house in order and partaking in family activities with Hazel and their two goldendoodles.
“Patrick and I are both hoping to get involved in community activities when things settle down,” said Donnelly.
Some of my favorite stories over the years writing this column have been ones like this. Where one of our hometown sons and daughters realize just how good we have it here in York and want to return to raise their families in the same place they grew up in.
