Albuquerque Public Schools students head back to class this week, and there is another change to the bell schedule this year.A lot of middle school families said the school day ended too late for their kids' after-school activities, and now APS is making changes to the bell schedule. “We got a lot of feedback from middle school families that they were frustrated that their students, their eighth graders, were not able to fully participate in high school athletics and activities,” APS chief of schools Dr. Channell Segura said. “And so that was information that was really important for us to hear. And so we've adjusted them this year.”The biggest factor driving these decisions is transportation. “What you know, many people don't understand is that transportation really drives the decisions that we make within our scheduling each year,” Segura said. “And each year is different. So, the number of buses that we have, the recruitment of bus drivers, impacts that.”APS transports 44,000 students every day, according to Segura, which demands a four-tier system, allowing for different start times for elementary, middle, and high school students.“We really wish that we could have the same start and end time for every school, but our resources don't allow for that,” Segura said. For some schools, class begins as early as 7:15 a.m. or as late as 9:15 a.m. For parents' schedules, some schools will offer programs to help with the untraditional bell schedules. “We are working really closely with our out-of-school providers to provide before-school and after-school programming so that families can drop their kids off on their way to work and pick up their kiddos once they get off of work, " Segura said. For a full list of back-to-school bell schedules, click this link.
